Surf Lessons in Cornwall - Are Surf Lessons Necessary to Learn to Surf ?

cornwall
Rach Eden asked:

So, you’re on holiday in Cornwall, you’ve got a week or maybe two if you’re lucky, the sun’s shining, the sea’s turquoise, and the surf’s up. There’s two types of people out on the water: the cool dude, who stands easily, riding the wave to shore, and the guy with his wetsuit zipped up the wrong way, who spends his time trying to stay afloat whilst swallowing a bucketful of seawater. Which one do you want to be?

If you want to be the “cool dude” or dudette, then you will be wise to sign up for some lessons. You will also learn how to put your wetsuit on the right way, avoiding the first cardinal sin of surfing!

Taking surf lessons in Cornwall with one of the renowned surf schools such as Waves Surf School (see bottom of this article for links) will get you standing up and riding a wave within your first two hour lesson. And yes, that’s true for everyone, for all ages and abilities, from Gran to Uncle Albert. What can you expect from a surf lesson? Well firstly, your instructor will probably be good looking, which some might say is the best perk of all! Seriously though, here are the perks:

* Firstly, you’ll get the best wetsuit around, in a size that fits, and one that will keep you warm.

* Equipment: your surfboard will be big enough to keep you safe, but soft enough to make sure that you don’t get hurt.

* You’ll have the best two hours of your holiday, and are sure to go home with the surfing bug!

* You’ll be standing and riding a wave within two hours. Some beginners take to it like a duck to water and, with the right instruction, open up their lives to a whole new hobbie.

Surfing can be fun for all the family and is suitable for all ages and abilities, especially if you have surf lessons where you will be provided with a big, soft board. Waves Surf School of Cornwall say that their youngest learner has been six, with their eldest being a 65 year old Grandad.

The one criteria of going out into the seas to learn to surf, is being able to swim. It is recommended that you can swim 50m before taking surf lessons. Remember, surfing is an excellent form of exercise and is great for keeping fit. You don’t see many overweight surfers paddling out to sea on their surfboards!

Cornwall is the perfect place to learn to surf, with gentle waves for all the family. There is a whole coastline to be explored, with the surf beaches found mainly on the north coast from Porthcothan to Harlyn, and Padstow on the doorstep and Newquay just around the corner. And for those in the family that don’t want to surf, there’s plenty of other things to do in Cornwall, from exploring the golden beaches, to eating in many of the fine restaurants.

Devon Rex - the Facts Every Owner of This Cat Breed Should Know

devon england
Robert W. Benjamin asked:

In the 1950s in England, a stray cat gave birth to a litter of kittens with a curly coat. Through crossbreeding and inbreeding, this interesting trait was maintained, resulting in today’s Devon Rex. It was once thought that the same mutation caused this and the Cornish Rex mutation (the fine, curly coat), but genetic testing has shown that this is not the case, making the Devon Rex a separate and distinct breed of cat. Due to crossbreeding, Devon Rexes come a wide variety of colors including black, white, blue, red, cream, chocolate, lilac, and caramel. They can also have various markings and patterns such as smoke, tabby, tortie, bi-color, tri-color and pointed. The Devon Rex coat can also come in a variety of coverings.

Some Devon Rexes are completed covered in the soft fur and others only have the occasional tuft. Some coats are curlier than others but all are soft and thin. Though Devon Rexes do not shed nearly as much as other breeds that are more densely coated, they do have some hair on them and will, therefore, shed. This makes them more suitable for those with allergies, but they are not a hypoallergenic cat.

Devon Rexes, on average, will weigh about six to nine pounds and are muscular. They will live about thirteen years. This outgoing cat is a performer. Devon Rexes like being the center of attention and will engage in many antics including jumping to high places, riding on the shoulders of their human companions and stealing food. Despite their antics, Devon Rexes are good family pets and adaptable to most situations.

Though active, they do well in apartment settings. Due to the delicate nature of their hair, a Devon Rex should be kept indoors. The sparse coat is insufficient to protect it from sunburn or cold. Grooming is done infrequently but when done, must be done carefully as the hair will break easily. Although very healthy, Devon Rexes can inherit genetic problems, such as cardiomyopathy, luxating patella, hip dysplasia, and spasticity.

There is a website that has great information on Devon Rex and most other breeds of cats. It has details that pertain to a cat breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

Cricket Live Results - West Indies Win 1st Test Against England

devon england
Peri Witny asked:

England were unable to overhaul the West Indies total of 392 score during its first inning. The English team scored 318 in its first inning and needed 74 runs to take the lead from the West Indies. However, the team succumbed to great bowling and the whole team collapsed as they posted a second inning score of 51 all out to hand over the first Test series to the West Indies with an inning  and 23 runs to spare in day 4 of the first Test series matches at Sabina Park.

West Indies garnered 40 more points to their overnight total for 392 with Stuart Broad taking five wickets in his maiden Test match, the only bright spot for England.

Flintoff saved the day for England as he prevented his side from registering an output than its recorded lowest scores of 45 as he was the only batsman to reach double figures of 24. The 51 is England’s third lowest total of all time. The 45 was registered against Australia in Sydney in 1886-87 and the 46 scored in Trinidad in 1993-94.

It was a revenge of sorts for the West Indies as they got back at their tormentors five years ago when England made them score 47 primarily due to Steve Harmison’s wicked bowling.

But this time, it was West Indies paceman Jerome Taylor who demolished the top order as he prevented explosive batsman Pietersen from creating more havoc to his side. Taylor matched Broad’s five wicket total in the 2nd inning. His impressive new ball spell left England’s second innings in shreds as they were dismissed at 2:35 pm local time when Harmison was bowled around his legs as he attempted to sweep Sulieman Benn.

Benn, a tall left-arm spinner collected four wickets as England failed to solve the West Indies bowlers.

Taylor started the onslaught after his team has posted a 74 runs lead. He threw the ball across Alistair Cook  for Devon Smith and second slip to catch at the second attempt. Benn then dismissed an off form Ian Bell. Bell attempted to do a cut shot but succeeded in edging the ball with his bat for wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin to catch the ball.

Taylor then dismissed Pietersen in awesome fashion after the luncheon interval with a full delivery of late swing heading towards off stump. Strauss then was out in the 17th over and the audience then sensed that their team was headed for victory.  The last three test series between the two teams show a score of 10-0 to England. The paceman, showing incredible pace bowled Paul Collingwood and Matt Prior successively in his next over.

Taylor, who showed quality in his bowling that can make any of the West Indies’ greats proud, departed the attack  going 5 for 11.

Benn, picked it up where Taylor left as the visitors only scored a run per over off him as Stuart Broad became victim number seven when he turned a delivery to short leg tamely.

Flintoff collected England’s first boundary during the 28th over and it came from Benn’s bowling. Ryan Sidebottom helped Flintoff with the scoring but it came to an end when Sidebottom was struck on the pad shuffling back across his stumps towards Benn.

cornwall
grey_laguna asked:

I’m looking for a holiday let somewhere near Newquay. It needs to have 2 bedrooms and be quite near the beach. My kids want to learn to surf so somewhere that gives access to surf schools would be good. All the websites I’ve looked at say places are £1000 - £1500 a week which is way too expensive for me

I’ve lost a whole street in Sidford Sidmouth Devon England. Do u know where Upcot/Upcott/Upcotte Hill has gone

devon england
Honey W asked:

In 1960(ish) I lived in Uppcott House on Uppcot Hill, (I don’t know the correct spelling) in Sidford, Sidmouth.
I have been there looking for the address, but cannot find it.
I have searched the net for a map of ’60’s Sidford, to no avail.
During that period there were new buildings being built near one end.
Maybe it was renamed due to enlargement, or perhaps the whole street was pulled down.
I really need to know. Please, can anyone tell me where it is/went?

Rent a Holiday Cottage on your Next Trip to Cornwall

cornwall
andrew.regan.2006@googlemail.com asked:

If you’re taking a trip down to the south-west of England this summer, you’ll have a number of things to consider before planning your trip. For instance, if you’re travelling with a large group of people - say, your family or a big gathering of friends - it might be hard for you to find accommodation that suits your needs. However, renting a holiday cottage in Devon or Cornwall is sure to put to rest any accommodation worries you might have - as well as giving you the opportunity to escape the hardships of urban life and explore the countryside in style.

Opt for a holiday cottage in Cornwall, for example, and you’ll be able to enjoy comfortable accommodation in one of England’s most stunning locations. If you’re a fan of nature walks, rent a holiday cottage by the Cornish coast and experience the South West Coastal Path, which will take you along the coastline of Britain’s south-west peninsula. The trail will lead you along some of the most spectacular remote cliffs, beaches, heaths, farms, fishing villages and towns in Cornwall, and provides a fantastic way for visitors to the south-west of England to experience the region’s diversity and stunning scenery.

Cornwall is home to a range of busy towns, so you can be sure that you’ll still be near any basic services that you might need on your holiday. Rent a holiday cottage near Falmouth, for instance, and you’ll be able to access all the amenities that a seaside town offers. What’s more, Falmouth is home to the world’s third largest natural harbour; and tourists staying near the town will also be able to visit the Glendurgan National Trust garden and the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, which is home to the National Maritime Museum’s small boat collection.

Alternatively, rent a holiday cottage near Penzance, one of Cornwall’s most bustling seaside towns, and you’ll be within easy distance of St. Michael’s Mount, a National Trust property located just off the coast of Penzance and one of Cornwall’s most visited attractions. And if you’ve got a car with you, why not take a drive from your holiday cottage near Penzance to the Tate St Ives, one of the four Tate Galleries in the UK.

But wherever you choose to rent your holiday cottage in Cornwall, there are certain must-see attractions that you’d be a fool to miss! Make sure you visit Land’s End - the UK’s most south-westerly point - for a taste of one of the country’s most famous locations. Moreover, take a trip to The Eden Project when you’re in Cornwall, to appreciate the iconic geographical and environmental feature which has fast become one of the most popular visitor attractions in the UK since its opening in 2001. Of course, no trip to Cornwall would be complete without tasting the regions’ culinary specialities, which include Cornish Pasties, seafood, Saffron Cake and the famous English Cream Tea.

So make sure you rent a holiday cottage the next time you visit Cornwall. Whether you’re on a large family get-together or you’re simply taking a romantic holiday with that special someone, holiday cottages are an ideal solution!

devon england
Mark Miles asked:

Are you looking for NLP trainers and advanced courses in the discipline in the south west NLP Exmouth Exeter area? NLP training, Devon is perhaps one of the most innovative training centers for training of this advanced human thinking technique.

What exactly is NLP and how does it help me?

NLP stands of neuro-linguistic programming which is a relatively new technique developed to study how the mind works, process information and delivers output. Thus, by analysing the brain using various skills, one can understand the psychology of particular people or groups of people and help them in improving their lifestyles or businesses.

Neuro indicates the physical system of the body such as the brains and nerves, Linguistic refers to the language that we use in communicating with each other and programming relates to the many possibilities and models which comprise the world that we live in. Devon’s Hevean - Lundy Island

devon england
Rod Booth asked:

Lundy Island is an enjoyable place, a Devon venue a million miles away from the “busyness” of everyday life; a place to relax and sit back, although you can also enjoy walking, church-bell ringing, diving, birdwatching, canoeing, climbing, fishing, snorkelling, photography, and painting!

Lundy Island is essentially a granite outcrop approximately three and a half miles long by half a miles wide, rising some four hundred feet out of the sea, 12 miles off the coast of Devon where the Bristol Channel meets the Atlantic. With its West Side being hit by the prevailing south-westerly winds and the East Side being much more sheltered, there is a profound difference between the flora that grows on the two opposite sides of Lundy.

But Lundy Island is a unique place for toher reasons, too. Visitors tend to come back for its clear seas, spectacular land and clarity of the night sky, a vision which remains clear and unobscured to all, since there are no city and street lights.

And visitors come to Lundy from all over the world: perhaps just to relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility; maybe to watch the wildlife, or to paint, or to take photographs, or even to ring the Church Bells. Then there are those active types who come to Lundy to expend a little more energy by walking, climbing, canoeing or diving.

To enhance your enjoyment of this beautiful place, there are various walks, talks and activities organised by the Island’s warden. There are “rocky shore rambles”, “Lundy by land and sea” lectures, wildlife and seabird walks and snorkeling trips.

The great thing is that all these events are free of charge and open to all (except snorkelling, which has a nominal charge to cover equipment hire and maintenance). Of course, donations to the Lundy Fund will always be very warmly welcomed! (As the island is privately owned.)!

The diverse flora and fauna on Lundy is so rich that the Island has been labelled as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Indeed Lundy is often referred to as one of Britain’s greatest natural wonders, having gained this accolade in a BBC Radio Times vote in 2005. The clean seas around Lundy have led to Lundy being designated as England’s only Marine Nature Reserve.

Whether you are bird spotting - puffins, without doubt being the most popular species to see - or whether you wish to see basking sharks, seals, the Lundy pony or even corals and seaweeds, then Lundy is where you’re going to see them.

Lundy Island offers the visitor a variety of accommodation in which to stay - 23 properties in total - including a 13th century castle, a late Georgian gentleman’s villa, a fisherman’s chalet and even a lighthouse. There is also a campsite at the southern end of the island.

Most of the island’s buildings have been built from the local, lightly-coloured granite, and many have been adapted from previous use, or made from stone reclaimed from redundant buildings. All properties offer heating: some have open fires as well. There are excellent facilities including: baths or showers, mains drains, and gas and electricity for heating or cooking. So that you need bring the minimum of equipment, most Lundy properties include sheets, pillowcases and towels in the rental price. And most unusually, each building comes with a library of relevant reference books.

You can get to Lundy Island either by timetabled steamer from April to October, or by helicopter from Hartland Point.

Holiday Cottages In England

devon england
Andrew Gibson asked:

Holiday homes in England have become a very popular form of accommodation for holiday makers. In England holiday cottages are available to rent from their owners and these country cottages offer splendid accommodate at very reasonable prices.

In London there are many art galleries, theatres, museums and many world famous shops. Many people come on vacation to London and stay in self catering apartments. This enables them to explore the local tourist attractions and eat out in the vast array of restaurants in London. Many spend a week in a London apartment experiencing all that the capital has to offer. They may then rent a delightful country cottage in Devon or Cornwall.

Devon is an extremely popular tourist attraction, with beautiful clean beaches and excellent surf. For those not wanting to stay in holiday cottages they can now rent self catering apartments. It is a great way to explore the local countryside or simply just relax on the beach.

Northumberland has many charming holiday cottages for rental and is a great base to explore the many castles in the area. It also has some of the best countryside in England. Moving south is the magnificent Durham cathedral which sits proudly on a hill and is guarded by Durham castle that sits next door to it.

For holiday makers wanting the outdoor lifestyle, there is the Lake District. Here you can stay in a holiday home or self catering apartment and use it as a base while you explore the mountains. Further down the west coast is Blackpool offering good value apartments for rental. Here you can experience the illuminations and take home your loved one a stick of famous Blackpool rock.

If it is architecture and history that you are looking for you can visit Oxford and Cambridge. These famous university towns are well worth a visit and have many holiday homes and cottages available for rental.

Many Americans come on vacation to England and are amazed by the local architecture and stunning scenery.

Golfing holidays are now extremely popular in England and many groups of golfers prefer to rent a holiday home or holiday cottage than staying in a hotel. As well as golfing, the golfers like to try out the local ales in the country pubs.

The summers in England can be warm and inviting and many holiday makers like to take their vacations down on the south coast. Here they can play on the clean white sandy beaches and swim in the clean sea. Sea food is plentiful and many foreign tourists like to try a plate of traditional fish and chips. When on holiday in the south coast, many tourists stay in holiday apartments or holiday cottages.

Fishing is another popular tourist pastime in England and many of the fast flowing rivers are home to trout and salmon. There is nothing better than catching your first salmon and then taking it back to your holiday home to cook and eat for your evening meal.
